Tamara Baker, Message Maestro


Tamara BakerTamara (Cox) Baker is often described by others as a woman of great passion, poise and perseverance. During her 20-plus-year career in public relations, she has earned the reputation as an expert in developing and executing meaningful strategic marketing communications campaigns.

Tamara spent the first half of her career in Washington, DC, first as a press secretary for a Member of Congress then as vice president for Hill and Knowlton, a global public relations agency. Her grassroots clients in DC included Fortune 500 companies to nonprofits, and her health care clients included health systems and pharmaceutical companies. A client, Glaxo, relocated Tamara to her native North Carolina to manage product communications for its block-buster IMITREX migraine treatment. She later became corporate communications director for a software company Glaxo funded to create a computerized patient record. When the company was sold, Tamara formed her own communications consulting business.

Some of her clients in NC have included the UNC Department of Pediatrics (managing development of their 16 web sites), several health care and technology companies, transportation industry businesses, and nonprofits. Recently, she led the successful PR launch for a business aviation hi-tech product that was covered by key media around the world.

Tamara’s award-winning skills range from managing comprehensive communications programs to developing targeted messages, media relations and publicity, press materials, web content, and printed collateral. Her client media placements include a long list of coverage on national news, talk shows, and online forums and in hundreds of major daily and local newspapers and specialized and trade media. Tamara has a BA in English and Writing from Columbia College.

Family is an important theme in Tamara’s life, and she comes from a large NC farm family. Her husband Todd is a physicist, a self-professed science geek. They have two young children who they adopted locally as babies. Tamara’s very active in her church (where she met Todd), her kids’ school and the local community.
